Self-holding with a PLC

The self-holding is done in the program. Start and stop buttons go to PLC inputs, the contactor to a relay output. Stop is wired NC so a loose wire stops the machine.

S1 start (NO 13–14) to input I1 and S0 stop (NC 11–12) to input I2. Relay output Q1 controls contactor K1. In the program: I1 with Q1's own contact in parallel, then I2 and coil Q1 in series.

How it works

+24V0VS1S0Q1K1I1I2L+1M2I1Q1I2Q1PLCprogram1At rest

S0 is an NC contact, so input I2 is on at rest and the I2 contact in the program is closed. I1 is open, so coil Q1 is not energised.

+24V0VS1S0Q1K1I1I2L+1M2I1Q1I2Q1PLCprogram2Start pressed

I1 is energised and coil Q1 energises. The relay output closes and K1 energises.

+24V0VS1S0Q1K1I1I2L+1M2I1Q1I2Q1PLCprogram3Start released

I1 drops out, but Q1's own contact keeps the rung closed. K1 stays on.

+24V0VS1S0Q1K1I1I2L+1M2I1Q1I2Q1PLCprogram4Wire comes loose

I2 loses its voltage, just as when the stop button is pressed. Q1 and K1 drop out.

The same self-holding as with relays, but the holding is done in the program. The start and stop buttons are wired to the PLC inputs and the contactor coil to a relay output.

Stop button as an NC contact

The stop button is wired to its input as an NC contact. The input is on at rest, and the program uses an NO contact of that input. If a wire comes loose, the input loses its voltage and the machine stops, just as in relay control.

Program

The rung has I1 with Q1's own contact in parallel. After them come I2 and coil Q1. Because I2 is in series with the whole branch, stop has priority even if both buttons are pressed at the same time.

Relay output

A relay output is the NO contact of a relay with its own terminals 1 and 2. Connect +24 V to terminal 1, and run a wire from terminal 2 to A1 of the contactor coil. A2 is connected to 0 V.

Common mistakes

  • The stop button is wired as an NO contact and the program uses an NC contact. The machine works, but a loose wire does not stop it.
  • The stop button is wired as an NC contact, but the program uses an NC contact of I2. Then the machine does not start at all.
